Ensuring a Successful Donation Exchange

This guide details recommendations for a donation with home insemination. If both parties have chosen intercourse as a donation method, we recommend reviewing our health and STI screening recommendations with both parties. Visit our community guidelines to learn more about ensuring a safe and respectful meeting, no matter if you choose home insemination or intercourse.

For Donors

  • Abstinence: It is recommended that the donor practices 2-3 days of abstinence since the last ejaculation before handing over the sample.

  • Transfer Method: Y factor recommends using a clean 50ml cup in plastic or glass. Clean your genitals and make sure to capture all of the ejaculate, especially the first half. Close the container well and store it close to your body, as sperm cells live best at 25-30 degrees Celsius until used.

  • Timing: A quick insemination is recommended, between 15-60 minutes after ejaculation. Please plan and coordinate with the recipient of your donation accordingly. After 15-20 minutes, the ejaculate liquifies and is ready for insemination. The earlier the semen sample is used, the better.

For Aspiring Parents

  • Ovulation: For a successful insemination it is crucial to track your cycle and plan insemination during ovulation. We recommend using ovulation tests to ensure the perfect timing and follow the instructions on the ovulation test kits to find your most fertile window.

  • Timing: A quick insemination is recommended, between 15-60 minutes after ejaculation. Please plan and coordinate with the donor accordingly. After 15 minutes the sample is liquified and ready for insemination. Aim to inseminate yourself close to 15 minutes after ejaculation, as the sperm cells

  • Insemination Tool and Process: Lie on your back with a pillow under your butt to slightly elevate your pelvis. Use a 25-50 ml syringe to insert the sperm sample close to the cervix. Stay in this position for 15-20 minutes.

Use Good Sense

  • Verify Information: Take your time to verify the information provided by the other party. Look for consistency in their profile and interactions.

  • Stay Alert: Avoid any pressure to rush decisions or commitments. Both parties should feel comfortable and respected. You should never feel pressured to conduct intercourse.

  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off during an interaction, it’s okay to pause or stop communication.

  • Maintain Respect: Building trust and mutual understanding is key. Respect the other party’s boundaries, preferences, and decisions at all times.
